Hi, to bad you are having such a struggle. Did you get the truck running? I'm no expert but after reading what you had posted about your attempt yesterday to get it to move , I believe that you will need to have all of the half shafts (from the differential to the final drives at the wheels ) connected before the truck will move under power. I think you will find that having one unhooked will produce the same results as having one wheel jacked up off the ground. It disables the drive system and the truck wont move. It sounds crazy for a system billed as 100% Traction. I have done it to my truck as an experiment because I had heard stories from old time plow guys around here in my home town in Maine . As the stories go... the truck goes off it's intended path into a ditch while plowing and ONE wheel is hung up off the ground. The truck is disabled until the clever operator thinks to stand on the brakes. This evidently creates enough drag to trick the system to lock back up again and the truck now backs out of the ditch and saves the day. Another version I have heard is a truck breaks an half shaft during a storm... now it's disabled until the same clever guy comes along, removes the broken half shaft and tightens up that side brake so that it's dragging. Once again the brake drag tricks the system into locking back up again and they finish plowing with 3 wheel drive. Like I said I have heard those stories from the guys who were there , so for the hell of it I jacked up one wheel of my '60 FCBS and poked it into gear and sure enough .... nothing .. didn't move. Then I stepped on the brakes and it made a little ''clunk '' an pulled it self off the jack like nothing . No telling if that truck your rescuing has other problems but I would try hooking that half shaft back up first before any thing else and go from there . Merry Christmas & Good luck Chip Austin

I have a '57 Walter for sale. I'm in Central NY (Oneonta area). This truck runs and drives (with a lot of muscle ) and has the Frink plow package with the V and wing. The Waukesha was replaced by the township I bouhgt it from with a 671 naturally aspirated Detroit diesel. I originally bought it for the power plant for a sawmill but didn't have the heart to cut it up after DRIVING it home. Excellent restoreable condition. Tires were put on new just before I bought it and have less than 500 miles on them. Does need cosmetics. Sacrifice for $4200. Will entertain reasonable offers. Have some pics, just don't have capability to upload at present.

I have a set of 445 x 22.5 duals too but for a lime spreader. It makes my truck 11.5' wide where will they let you run a truck that wide? The 14:00 24 duals are only 9' wide I think or 9.5' wide.

Well, I dunno what happened but the thread I tried to post a litl ebit ago doesn't seem to ahve worked. In any event, I was asking about how a ca. 40s-50s PDH Oshkosh might have looked in the 60s, but subsequently came across the "another old PDH OShkosh" pic on this site which most likely would answer my question. If Bill or anyone else has anything to add about how the PDH OShs would have been painted in teh 40s-60s timeframe please add your .02!
Anyhow, what got me started thinking about this was being told of a gentleman's recollection- to my surpise since I was under the impression that by the 60s most PDH OShs, FWDs, Walters, etc. would have been found out in NW PA,- that a ca. 1946 Oshkosh was being used t plow snow on at least one plow route in Pike County (extreme NE PA) in the mid-60s. Supposedly had only a front plow, no wing, but otherwise I'd assume it looked pretty similar to the "Another odl PDH Oshkosh" picture. Was told that later, in the 70s, the same route was being plowed with a Howe-Coleman Chevy 4x4 (again, front plow only), an example of which there are pictures of elsewhere on this site. Also, if a close-up photo of the old black and yellow PDH decal exists, if anyone could post it I'd like to see what it really looked like. I would assume most likely an older PDH Osh still in service in the 60s woudl have been wearing this decal?

I borrowed an FVBS manual and scanned it completely. The V is for a the GMC 637 ci V8 that replaced the 702 ci V12 and was based on the 478 V6. I would love to hear one some day because of the uneven firing order due to 8 cylinders and a 60 degree engine bank. Heck, I'd rather own one in a truck! This has to be a rare Walter... Anyways, have all the 40,000 gvw pages copied and could email jpg of whatever. ..and the Budd wheel manual and the power steering booster and...

Hi my name is Tim and I am the proud owner of a 1952 W712 Oshkosh Snow Plow. I plan on buying several more to add to my collection and I have my eyes set on a 1920's model that needs some TLC.
One of things that I am most proud of is that for several years now I have been a collector of Oshkosh Truck history and memorabilia with the dream of someday retiring to Oshkosh and opening up a museum for others to come and enjoy. My collection is valued at close to $10,000.00 with many rare items in it. I have many great friends who work for OTC and by far my best friend is Clarence who has helped me with my collection since day one. For now I am trying to spread the word to all that I meet about my collection and ask for everyones help and keep an eye out for Oshkosh items. Thanks, Tim

I havn't got the details, but when the snowstorm hit here today the ground wasn't froze yet so unpaved roads are more tricky, especially on steep hills where shale bedrock isn't far below the surface, I'm told somehow a new plow or wing bounced up after hitting an obstruction on the shoulder on a newer big tandem drive conventional truck and smashed a cab window resulting in the driver getting glass in his hand. Supposedly the rest of the highway crew has had similar problems. All I could think of was a stray end of cable having slack enough to pop a cab window. Have to ask more questions. I have never heard of anything like this before.

I have a 67 snogo which I had to fix the chain. No one makes links for that chain anymore. I think it is a 1 inch long link, but the rods are to long. You have to get sides from a 1 in chain link and then make your own shorter rods with cotter pins. It is working so far.

Supposedly donated to a electric utility museum up in Potsdam, NY but the Mac Noble place in Redfield (Harvestors Mill Rd) has been sold and it must be moved, they are talking it might get junked, I stuck my neck out and told Portner I would pay to have it moved first (the daughters still have to move Noble's old 1920's Brockway and 1950ish Ford tractor/forklift out as well). Portner has the 6 cyl. chassis and possibly 6 cyl Waukesha engine that the Byers Bearcat unit sat on, Noble got the Byers, and the remains had gone to Wendel Still, where Portner got them (the tracks were used for reinforcement in a barn floor). It also has the shovel front laying there I believe. If someone else is interested in a neat old Byers crane (the whole unit, it's mounted on a 1946 Chevy truck I believe) please call up Portner at 315-336-4242, if I buy it and they don't want it at the Constableville engine show I will have to take it to Portner's anyways. (My father says I should buy a daily driver truck first).

I'm trying to find information, preferably with photographs/drawings explaining the drive system of a Walter all wheel drive truck.. I'm considering buying one but, as I understand it, the drive system that Walter used (this truck is from the mid sixties) is somewhat unconventional..
I can only assume that it was a good system in its day but will I be able to restore and use the truck today without the fear of some irreplaceable part or component failure? I'm not comfortable buying something blindly, so I'm hoping someone can educate me as to what potential problems to be aware of, and what to look out for.. Thanks for any advice or help in advance!

Hey Guys ,Just wondering. Where does the Tow Plow thread start. Sometimes I get confused cause I see subjects being talked about such as plowman seems to be answering someones question but i don't see the question on tow plows. Am I missing something under general discussion threads?? Thanks, Grant.

I would have to see this thing in operation, as Plowman said, see how it would do in adverse conditions, not only deep snow, but on slippery going, and dealw ith obstructions like potholes, manhole covers, rough pavement, etc. It honestly looks like an accident waiting to happen to me, unless somehow it has power driven wheels at the far end, I have no idea how it would handle the side thrust on the truck. they honestly might better go get a airport Walter snowfighter, even an old one. I like to laugh at how the modern highway tandem drive plow trucks are looking more and more like the length/width traction ratio of a Linn tractor, just higher speed. If you want a Euclid or LeTourneau earthscraper moving 3 lanes of snow, just go ahead and get a big Euc and don't mess around building contraptions on a ordinary plow truck. Honestly, a conveyor belt/blower system that would funnel, lift and windrow the snow out over the guardrail into the median would make a lot more sense to me. (Overpass bridges might be an issue). I have to wonder about these wonderful little hydrogen cars that piss water on the road, what a great idea! If it wasn't for a thing called "winter".....But then ethanol is great too, was worried about being able to leave gas in storage or fuel tanks too long. But, unlike those ideas I'd give the tow plow benefit of the doubt until I saw one, before like Maurice Bridges, when I showed him my high school shop class design assignment for a folding v-plow back in 1982-83, I pronounce "such a thing would never work or never sell."
