Hi my name is Tim and I am the proud owner of a 1952 W712 Oshkosh Snow Plow. I plan on buying several more to add to my collection and I have my eyes set on a 1920's model that needs some TLC.
One of things that I am most proud of is that for several years now I have been a collector of Oshkosh Truck history and memorabilia with the dream of someday retiring to Oshkosh and opening up a museum for others to come and enjoy. My collection is valued at close to $10,000.00 with many rare items in it. I have many great friends who work for OTC and by far my best friend is Clarence who has helped me with my collection since day one. For now I am trying to spread the word to all that I meet about my collection and ask for everyones help and keep an eye out for Oshkosh items. Thanks, Tim

A great way to help preserve and respect these large to X-large trucks, which got us through many wars, the cold war and just kept this awesome country moving!!!

Is anyone taking trucks/equipment to Owls Head for the show this weekend? I'm not making the trip as I am saving my weekend away for Hillsboro. My Dad is going to be up there though so I want to let him know who he should be looking for... Plowman's Linn would be an easy mark, but I'm not sure on others rigs. DavCut

I'm not finding many of these restored except in military museums in places like Nebraska or Texas. I the summe rof 1920 the NY State Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and highway engineer offered these and other militray surplus trucks to municipalities just for the cost of shipping and license, the state fairground in Syracuse was used as a distribution center. One of these was cannibalized for parts and left on the farm of an old mechanic in Rome, NY and Portner ended up with at after the auction of the mechanic's farm out in Ava, Oneida County, NY so I'm guessing it was owned by a local municipality. Portner wants to sell it, and I don't need another project. I found video on youtube of a restored one down in Texas at a aereodrome but sorry didn't save th link. You can reach Portner at 315-336-4242 or flowerpower282@juno.com Yes it's rough, driveline is gone, wood all rotted away, but wheels and hard rubbe rin good shape, unfortunately the guy who moved it snapped the spring hangers so the one axle sets out on top, it should have been jacked up out of the ground first.

Now I'm trying to think of the person, I think he lived in MA who had a registry of Sterling owners, memory fails me if it was Sewall or Perkins. I think there is regularly Sterling material on Ebay, their novelty was the use of chain drive into postwar years. You don't often see them as plow trucks, usually they were used off road, logging, mining, construction, etc. and of course by the military. The only one I know of used for plowing was a military surplus truck used as a backwoods logger in the Central Adirondacks into the 1960's, a friend of mine spent almost a week changing the transmission in it as the replacement unit holes didn't match up. Looked all over and can't find that (c. 1990?) registry, but think the man's name was Perkins.

Says he's going to send some of the collection, including a number of old Brockways, to the scrapyard soon, and this plow, whose only real defect is having too many coats of paint, is apt to go.

I see they have a nice batch of Oshkosh and Walter trucks, Frink plows, etc. including one pre-WW2 style Walter, and one they claim is the biggest Walter ever built, with a V12 Cummins and huge blower on front.

I think they started using this c. 1933-1935 as often the plow would be a different age than the vehicle it was mounted on and someone would complain that they thought they had a "old" or "secondhand" plow instead of new.

With plenty of Linn owners desiring to aquire Linn-Frink plow equipment, you wouldn't think anyone would be stupid enough to load Linn-Frink v-plows and wings on a trailer and send them to a junkyard, but the guy buying property next door to me did just that a week ago saturday. He didn't bother to notify the owner of the larger plow, Bruce Thain out in CT, a model 169-SP (that would require an overwidth permit for anyone else to haul it). Of course they would have brought a lot more for scrap in the middle of winter than right now, or easily sold on ebay without even having to lift a finger. 3 private collectors in NY state plus the Sullivan Co. Hwy. Dept. have plows with their tractors, and two collectors in Maine plus the Cole Transportation Museum in Bangor Maine (which has an excellent antique snowplow display). But that's the situation in Morris NY, they only care about Linn history if they see a chance to profit from it, and that is why so little is left today.

My dad used to tell me about the early snow plows. The first real plow around the Appleton WI. area was similiar to this. It was mounted on a Cat and had one wing. It was in the twenties and the wing was operated by a chain hoist! The wing operaor stood on the flat-topped fender. This example I would believe to be from the 1930's as it is, and appears to always have been, hydraulic in operation. But it is early hydralics as attested to by the size of the cylinders. Even allowing for the very heavy construction of the plow assembly, the piston sizes indicate a relatively low pressure system. It is located just west of Cedar Grove, WI. BTW< it is out-lined in them small Christmas lights. Apparently the owner lights it up around the holidays.

Or go to the ATHS website, a number of decent looking trucks at what they probably are worth for scrap iron alone, save 'em while you can. I dropped my membership, easier to look at teh website or just breeze through a copy in the rack of the local Tractor Supply store. My only foray into snow removal equipment this year is a Massey Ferguson lawn tractor with blower we brought home to keep the plow tractor company, and cleaning up, repairing and painting snow shovels.

Any chance of adding a Sargent plow page? Keywords would be Maine Steel Products, Union Ironworks, Portland, ? the scrappers got teh one wing post with three pulleys on the end at Portners but the single slide escaped. As did the nose frame and slide for the big FWD. You have to be with scrappers every second, but then they left their gear overnight and someone stole the gauges, hoses, cutter torch and even the goggles off their truck, about a $800 loss.
Also Craig Morgan in Triangle, NY has the big Frink v-plow, (sounds like a 447+? , a 7 bolt straight pattern on the blades) which was on a big double wing 1963 International that just went to the Tackaberry Museum, he says it has many coats of paint so is in good shape. |

You are going to have to explain how to post photos, would suggest catagories by make unless others have a better idea. I don't know if a special catagory for sale/salvage equipment in danger of being chopped for scrap (seems like most of it already has been in the last few years).
