Walter 100% TractionThis is a featured page

bevel drive

The key to Walter's success as 100% traction lies in the torque proportioning bevel drive. This differential seeks the wheel with the most traction, opposite of standard automotive differentials. This is accomplished without the use of clutches . Another key is the fact that there is a third bevel drive built into the transmission that directs power front to rear. With this setup, there is no need for a transfer case. The trucks drive like a conventional single axle until the drive tire loses traction and the bevel drives kick in. I experimented with the ACRS and blocked the rear axle and one side of the front with the tires off the ground. Without hesitation, the truck drove off all three blocks with only the one front tire. This drive was developed after WW1 and remained basically unchanged thru the end of production. This style differential is now marketed as a high performance unit under the Quaife name.

This is a "picture" of the "painting" of my ACRS. My friend Albrecht commissioned this original, oil on canvas painting and gave it to me in 2002. It measures 18"X24" and is proudly displayed in our sun room.

MODEL NUMBERS

I've added a couple of attachments from a letter from the Walter factory. It explains the reasoning behind the model numbers for the Walter trucks. Remember too, the first two digits of a truck serial number indicate the year of manufacture. Examples are in the truck register page with my two pieces.

McLean's Big Walter

Here is the video that shows a machine very similar to McLeans working at an Air Force base around Boston. It looks close, but probably not the same machine. The picture is the truck when it sat at the Somerset County Garage in PA. As the story goes, when PennDOT brought the machine in, they didn't realize there was a big hole in the block of the Cummins V-12. Oh well, $30k later, it was running!

There is a lot of model information in the two scans by sullb listed below in attachments. These give a full explanation of the model numbers and what the represent. Click once on the scan to get a readable version. Thanks sullb for the info!

Stumbled on to this on Google videos. Not great quality but good action footage. The header indicates "Walter Snow Plow" and "1993 Town of Root Blizzard"

mcemond Any idea on where to find modern wheels? 3 Oct 30 2009, 9:24 PM EDT by deckerfire

Hi Again, Its been a month or so now and my local commercial tire place has yet to find modern steel wheels to fit my walter (best guess 1935 FBR as seen on the "A kemp walter" page). The ones they've found have a valley in the middle of the wheel that won't fit over the inner wheel assembly. I was wondering if there's some standard wheel out there that would fit. I want to do a modern wheel because I don't want to deal with tube or custom tires and I've had issues in the past with 'used' steel wheels not holding a seal.
Thanks
Mike

Took some photos of an ex snow lift cab over at the ATHS hudson mohawk truck show yesterday.

Gas, 4 wheel steering, lost the snow dozer blad a while back, guy built a cradle in the back to hold a 18cylander air craft motor and painted it in camo.
