Shipped summer through late fall 1944, they used up a lot of their C5 series parts on this order of about 25 units, shipped to the US Navy Bureau Yards & Docks, until John Belfield showed up with one had supposed them all ditched in Pacific. The building in background is our old school gym here in Morris, the tractor sits where I had kindergarten class about 30 years later. The shack on the roof is our local aerial observation post, which in most communities lead to long hours of volunteers cooped up in a tight space and extramarital affairs, luckily they had no enemy planes to report. Oh yeah, back to the tractors, the semi trailers were brought up from Georgia, my father used to play on these and other tractors down at the factory, he remembers those seats on the back were pretty hard. I actually have the service manual/parts list for one of these.

On one of these messageboards the issue came up of finding the engine size, the formula Bud Bridges gave me years ago is Bore squared x .7854 x stroke x number of cylinders = displacement, figuring in inches, (not sure if it would work with metric, but who uses that?).

Well, I dunno what happened but the thread I tried to post a litl ebit ago doesn't seem to ahve worked. In any event, I was asking about how a ca. 40s-50s PDH Oshkosh might have looked in the 60s, but subsequently came across the "another old PDH OShkosh" pic on this site which most likely would answer my question. If Bill or anyone else has anything to add about how the PDH OShs would have been painted in teh 40s-60s timeframe please add your .02!
Anyhow, what got me started thinking about this was being told of a gentleman's recollection- to my surpise since I was under the impression that by the 60s most PDH OShs, FWDs, Walters, etc. would have been found out in NW PA,- that a ca. 1946 Oshkosh was being used t plow snow on at least one plow route in Pike County (extreme NE PA) in the mid-60s. Supposedly had only a front plow, no wing, but otherwise I'd assume it looked pretty similar to the "Another odl PDH Oshkosh" picture. Was told that later, in the 70s, the same route was being plowed with a Howe-Coleman Chevy 4x4 (again, front plow only), an example of which there are pictures of elsewhere on this site.
Also, if a close-up photo of the old black and yellow PDH decal exists, if anyone could post it I'd like to see what it really looked like. I would assume most likely an older PDH Osh still in service in the 60s woudl have been wearing this decal?

Hubbard had two, the other he sold to his helper in the museum, Roger Ree of Milford, NY, who has about ten antique vehicles. Then there is Norman Gaulin of Tuxedo Park who has the first one I ever saw. My father saw one of Hubbard's for sale for $75 years ago but didn't buy it because it wouldn't hitch on the back of a VW bus. Gaulin's said "Ford & Smiley" on it and was hauled to the Hershey PA flea market by someone from Maine when he bought it. I was trying not to load up the site with too many similar photos and accidentally duplicated some in the album as it is. Ther emust be more of these out there but all the ones I have checked on turned out to be 1960's era ones from Montgomery Wards or similar with a regular caster wheel underneath. I see Louis Lombard later built one with pnuematic lift for loading barrels of potatoes into the back of trucks.

Hi my name is Tim and I am the proud owner of a 1952 W712 Oshkosh Snow Plow. I plan on buying several more to add to my collection and I have my eyes set on a 1920's model that needs some TLC. One of things that I am most proud of is that for several years now I have been a collector of Oshkosh Truck history and memorabilia with the dream of someday retiring to Oshkosh and opening up a museum for others to come and enjoy. My collection is valued at close to $10,000.00 with many rare items in it. I have many great friends who work for OTC and by far my best friend is Clarence who has helped me with my collection since day one. For now I am trying to spread the word to all that I meet about my collection and ask for everyones help and keep an eye out for Oshkosh items. Thanks, Tim

Good use? China building it's infrastructure to reduce us to a colonial state that exports raw goods and imports all our manufactured goods from them, not to mention building the world's largest air fleet, tank armada and navy for when they foreclose on our unpayable national debt. Sorry to be gloom and doom but we are right back where we were in the 1930's in more ways than one. But when someone tells you it is better to cut up working machinery, haul it halfway around the world, turn it into new parts, probably a carcinogen spewing diesel that is tempermental in cold weather, and ship it back here and sell it at ten time what the truck it replaced cost new, that is just stupid. I'm all for keeping equipment and crews safe, don't get me wrong, but junking stuff just because you want new stuff is stupid. And as taxes skyrocket and all levels of government have to cutback, new trucks and plows to replace serviceable equipment can only be justified by destroying the old, they don't want the truck tehy just said was worn out being bought by someone local and used the next ten years when it's replacement is being traded off on another new one. Many town barns are too small for the new trucks now and then ones coming out, due to engine configuration and fuel cells, will be even larger. My comment on diesel being a known carcinogen, being one of the most mutangenic non-radioactive substances known, should be understood in the context that natural gas and propane molecules are just smaller, so tehy can pass through filters diesel can't, and that just means they can penetrate further into your body. Only the mileage justifies diesel over gasoline, but I still prefer gasoline, the lead is out, Carol Browner's MTBE additive, that caused groundwatwer problems, is out. Global climate is controlled by the solar cycle and vulcanism, neither of which man has any influence over, carbon credits and cap and trade are just a rip off.

Hi Again, Its been a month or so now and my local commercial tire place has yet to find modern steel wheels to fit my walter (best guess 1935 FBR as seen on the "A kemp walter" page). The ones they've found have a valley in the middle of the wheel that won't fit over the inner wheel assembly. I was wondering if there's some standard wheel out there that would fit. I want to do a modern wheel because I don't want to deal with tube or custom tires and I've had issues in the past with 'used' steel wheels not holding a seal. Thanks Mike

I have only seen it in the dark and it is still on the trailer. Plowman

I been keeping tabs on the website but the coming winter has me stressed out. I have several restoration ready trucks outside and I want a roof over them. I don't have enough firewood to make it all the way through. My yard is not ready for plowing with to much stuff out of place. My shop has to many antiques in it so I am having a tough time operating. Storage is a big problem. The handwheels are looking great. If I get some other restorations done maybe I can do up the truck they belong on. I have a nice surprise for the website coming in a few days. No hints except it is coming from 3500 miles away and you don't find one everyday.

When I posted that adv I was debating going to the big Homecoming/clan gathering 2009 in Scotland, but didn't after all. I had thought about trying to buy some land/fixer upper house but with local taxes going through the roof decided against that unless things get real cheap. Right now I would only sell it for legal US gold or silver coinage, for less, maybe even 50% less. But then that would only cause problems, as the govt can seize anything you keep in safety deposit boxes anyways. So the tractor is a lot safer way to store wealth in plain sight.
